The Los Angeles Superior Court jury in California decided that Bentonville, Arkansas-based retail company Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. was not guilty of any wrongdoing in the death of 55-year-old Lancaster resident William Akins. Akins was killed in a July 24, 2012 rollover accident on state Highway 58 when his spare tire failed.

According to Akins’ lawyers, Wal-Mart workers should have recommended the 20-year-old spare tire be updated when Diann Akins, William’s wife, took their Jeep for new tires. Court documents showed Akins died when his son, Daniel, lost control of their 1990 Jeep Cherokee after the tread separated from the rear tire while traveling along state Highway 58, 68 miles from their home. The tire was 22 years old at the time of the accident.
