The tort reform movement often turns to the well-known McDonald’s “hot coffee lawsuit” as an example of what it would claim are frivolous personal injury suits that clog up the courts and make people rich for hurting themselves. This is a harmful myth that turns the public against its own interests.

The narrative that the public has generally heard for this case is that a woman spilled McDonald’s coffee on herself and saw it as an opportunity to seek damages from the fast-food chain. This description of the events is complete distortion of what actually happened. The video below does an excellent job of quickly explaining the facts of the case, Liebeck v. McDonald’s Restaurants, and how the tort reform movement is misguided.
