Fairview Elementary Students Rock their Anti-Distracted Driving Projects

Distracted driving is a national epidemic made worse in recent years by the increased use of technology and mobile devices in vehicles. In the process of changing their music, searching the internet, making phone calls, and texting, drivers cause collisions that can result in serious injuries and even fatalities. In order to raise awareness about this deadly problem and to promote conscientious and distraction-free driving, the attorneys at McCutchen Napurano - The Law Firm have implemented an anti-distracted driving campaign. Our goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of texting and talking while driving. We hope to encourage both drivers and passengers to take an active part in ending this deadly epidemic.

In an effort to raise awareness about this cause, the attorneys at McCutchen Napurano - The Law Firm challenged the sixth graders at Fairview Elementary School in Fort Smith to make anti-distracted driving posters. After creating their posters, students sought out signatures from drivers who pledged to protect lives by never texting or talking while driving. Additionally, drivers pledged to speak out as passengers when they witnessed distracted driving, and to encourage friends and family to drive distraction free. For their efforts, the best posters received prices for their excellent work. The first place winner, Audrey Summerhill, won an iPad and will have her anti-distraction poster design on a billboard starting in May. Coming in second place was Emma Black, who received a $100 Walmart gift card and Zahriese Robinson in third with a $50 Walmart gift card. In addition, Mr. Cohen’s class received the most pledges from licensed drivers to drive distraction-free, and they won a pizza party for their admirable efforts.

The extraordinary work of these bright kids demonstrates the dedication and care of our youth concerning such serious subjects as distracted driving. Seeing their passion as they worked on these projects provides hope for the future. The positive impact programs like these can make in bringing greater awareness to important social issues could slowly change the way drivers interact with their electronic device. Congratulations to the students of Fairview Elementary as they embark on their journey of making the world a safer and better place.
