The Fort Smith Police Department officers issued 428 traffic citations over the course of three weeks this past June as part of the “Operation Seeing Red 2” campaign, according to the Times Record on July 14.

From June 8 to June 28, officers were posted near a selection of stop light controlled intersections where they watched for vehicles running red lights. Officers heavily patrolled intersections at which a majority of car accidents occur, including Rogers Avenue and Waldron Road, Rogers Avenue and South 74th Street, Towson Ave. and Phoenix Ave., and Jenny Lind Road and Zero Street.

Of the 428 citations issued, 351 were given to Arkansas residents. Fort Smith residents accounted for 235 of those citations. Sgt. Greg Copeland said in the report: “By continuing with aggressive traffic enforcement, including issuing citations to red light runners, the FSPD hopes the number of violations will decrease.”

This is the second campaign held in an attempt to discourage traffic violations and may be indicative of a significant safety issue with careless drivers in Fort Smith.
